Why Gemini's case is the sharpest
Mercury stays within about a sign's width of the sun. So for any sun sign, Mercury is in the same sign or a neighbor.
For Gemini: Mercury in Taurus, Gemini, or Cancer. Three signs, three elements: earth, air, water. A Gemini sun can have Mercury reading as air, earth, or water, and tradition describes each way of conversing differently.
That is why the sign's own ruler is the thing that undermines its sun-sign paragraph. The paragraph assumes the Mercury is in Gemini. Often, by the geometry of the orbit, it is not.
The mutable rule
Gemini shares its mode with Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, and the tradition reads mutable signs as the adjusting, transitional ones. In pairing, that produces a familiar remark: that the sign is easy to get on with and hard to hold. Read it for what it is.
